"radiofreeohio.org"

1. Visit the website.
2. Read rants about how bad commercial radio sucks in the Akron/Canton area.
3. Become slightly interested in what these "radiofreeohio" people are doing, particularly because they've been "interrupting" broadcasts on other frequencies with pirate radio-style cryptic statements and promises of change.
4. Run a quick check and learn that the site is registered to Clear Channel, presumably as a promotion for an upcoming format switch at one of their Akron-area stations.

I understand their idea of doing this guerrilla-type stuff as a promotion and stunt but it seems self-defeating to me. They're ripping corporate radio as a means of encouraging people to listen to a slightly different kind of corporate radio, which I'm sure has been analyzed up and down by Clear Channel suits to make sure it won't interfere with their existing stations in the area.

Go to the message board on the radiofreeohio site and let them know they aren't fooling anyone.

Which, of course, is highly illegal and will find themselves in jail once the FCC catches up to them.

But if "Radio Free Ohio" = Clear Channel, which is almost certainly the case, is it really against the law for CC to "interrupt" their own programming?

Very interesting. Aren't there still FCC ramifications if CC's trying to make it seem like their airwaves are being interfered with?

What do you mean by "interrupting?" Are they breaking into other station's broadcasts, or are they just buying advertisements on them?

Either way, what a lame-ass idea. This is the kind of stuff that makes people hate Clear Channel. Instead of trying to deceive their audience, why don't they just play better music? Too difficult, I guess...

To clarify, the Radio Free Ohio "pirate" broadcasts have only been "interrupting" Clear Channel stations in Akron and Canton (afaik).

Since it's all Clear Channel, they could just run them as promos rather than advertisements but schedule them at odd times instead of during commercial breaks as they normally would.

Interesting site.

I tried to track down a Clear Channel connection, but was unsuccessful. I ran WHOIS with a couple different registrars (godaddy, network solutions, and the sponser registrar, alldomains.com) and all returned a private registration with no direct connection to anybody.

Just my 2 cents. I'd put money on it being a hacked off listener or group of hacked off listeners... it just looks all too simple to be a corporate snow job.

I did a WHOIS through Network Solutions and got what looked like nothing interesting but then I clicked on the IP address near the bottom of the entry for radiofreeohio.org (207.230.150.254) and got this result, which definitely points to Clear Channel. Of course, I'm not a professional website digger-upper so I guess I could be wrong, but that seems like too much of a coincidence to actually be a coincidence.

I was hoping you would share your super ninja skills with me!!! You're correct, that IP is in Clear Channel's subnet... I stand corrected!

Yeah, for the most part Akron radio does suck, but they do have 91.3 The Summit. Check it out, they have Over The Rhine as the current featured artist: http://www.wapsfm.com/

I used to listen to the station when I lived up that way a few years ago.

This got picked up by boingboing , so it might be interesting to see if they pull this little stunt or keep trying to pretend it is legit.
Of course boingboing forgot to mention that this was first discovered by one of WOXY's own. (This might be a good way to get the word out about WOXY though! Every site you see that mentions it, make sure you post there telling them about this thread! Some REAL grassroots promotion!)
